George Neville (bishop)

George Neville (c. 1433 † June 8, 1476 ) was Lord Chancellor of England from 1465 to 1476 and Archbishop of York.

Life

Neville was the youngest son of Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury and the brother of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1456 he became Bishop of Exeter, after the victories of the House of York in 1460 Lord Chancellor and Archbishop in 1465. From then on his fate following a similar trend as that of his brother and when he died in 1471, took to him for three years caught. Neville was among the English clergy one of the first proponents of the study of Greek language.
