George Washington Stephens, Sr.

George Washington Stephens ( born September 22, 1832 in Swanton, Vermont, USA, † June 20, 1904 in Montreal, Canada) was a Canadian lawyer, businessman, landowner and politician. He was known especially for his activities in the Parliament of the Province of Québec and as a member of the Cabinet under Prime Ministers of two.

Career

Stephens came in bordering Canada, Vermont, the son of Harrison Stephens (1801-1881) and Sarah Jackson to the world. The father came from the small town of Jamaica, Vermont and had brought it there as a shoe manufacturer to a fortune. In 1830 he settled in Montreal, where he worked as a retail clerk and started a family. George Stephens had two brothers, Romeo H. and Sheldon Samuel Stephens.

Stephens was first in his family's retail industry. In 1863 he graduated from McGill University in Montreal and was a member of the Bar of Quebec, a company founded in 1849 in Quebec Bar Association. After working at a law firm, he worked as a single lawyer.

1868 Stephens was elected to the local government of Montreal, where he served as a councilor for the district of Saint- Laurent. He was active intermittently until 1892 in the local government. During this period, Stephens got by the Canadian Press nicknamed "The Corporate Watch Dog".

In the Quebec General Election 1881 Stephens was elected for the electoral district of Montreal Centre in the Parliament of Quebec as a candidate of the Quebec Liberal Party ( Parti also libéral du Québec ( PLQ) ). At the next election in 1886 he was not re-elected, and in 1890 he joined again unsuccessfully. It was not until 1892 Stephens was re-elected, this time as a representative for the city of Huntingdon. 1896 Stephens gave a bill forbidding the unmount to provocative theater advertising.

1897 reached his political career peaked when he was appointed as minister without portfolio in the cabinet of Félix- Gabriel Marchand, the acting prime minister for the province of Quebec. In 1900 he took over the same position under the new Prime Minister Simon- Napoléon Parent. In 1902 he was appointed colonial Commissioner for the province of Quebec.

Family

1865 Stephens married the much younger Elizabeth McIntosh, had Scottish roots. They had a son, George Washington Stephens, Jr. ( 1866-1942 ). George Stephens, Jr. reached in the Third Artillery of Montreal to the rank of Lieutenant - Colonel and also went into politics later. He joined the League of Nations and was Chairman of the Government Commission, and others, the League of Nations in the Saarland.

After the early death of his first wife he married in 1878 her younger sister, Frances Ramsey McIntosh. With her he had another son, Francis Chattan Stephens ( 1887-1918 ). Chattan was a stockbroker and founded the Group FC Stephens & Co. He married a daughter of the Canadian Minister Sir Edward Kemp. In World War I he became a lieutenant in the 13th Canadian Battalion in France and serves on the front. Chattan Stephens died in October 1918, the so-called Spanish flu.

George Stephens died in 1904 at the age of 71 years and was buried in the cemetery of Mont -Royal of Montreal. His widow Frances came in 1915 with the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U- boat lost their lives.
