George William Foote

George William Foote ( born January 11, 1850 in Plymouth, † October 17, 1915 ) was an English writer and representatives of secularism, he also took a prison sentence in buying his bet against the domination of the Church.

Life

In 1868, Foote moved to London and soon became followers of secularism, freethought and republicanism. He joined the Young Men's Secular Association and the National Secular Society and contributed to the National Reformer of Charles Bradlaugh. In 1877 he joined the British Secular Union, which was founded due to Bradlaugh leadership style. Foote later reconciled but with Bradlaugh. Foote worked with George Jacob Holyoake. 1881 started Foote The Freethinker, a still existing publication series. Due to some of his statements, he was sentenced to imprisonment for blasphemy.
