George Zanias

Giorgos P. Zanias (Greek Γιώργος Π Ζανιάς, also Georgios P. Zanias, George P. Zanias, . Born August 16, 1955 in Orchomenus ) is a Greek economist. He was Finance Minister in the Cabinet Pikrammenos.

Career

Zanias studied at the Athens University of Economics and at the University of Reading, where he graduated with a diploma in 1979 and 1980 with a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics. He obtained in 1983 at the University of Oxford his doctorate. From 1983 to 1986 he was a lecturer at the University of Oxford from 1987 to 1991 assistant professor at the University of Crete. From 1991 to 1995 Zanias was associate professor at the Agricultural University of Athens and from 1995 to 2004 at the Athens University of Economics. At the same time he was 1998-2001 president and scientific director of the Center for Planning and Finance ( KEPE ) and 2001-2004 Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance. Last Zanias was Professor of Finance and Head of the Department of International and European Economic Studies of the Economic University of Athens.

His research interests are applied econometrics, rural development and international development.

Zanias worked as an expert of the European Commission, the World Bank and the UN. He also wrote columns for To Vima Sunday.
