Gerald Balfour, 4th Earl of Balfour

Gerald Arthur James Balfour, 4th Earl of Balfour ( born December 23, 1925 in Haddington, † 27 June, 2003 Haddington ), from 1945 to 1968 with courtesy title Viscount Traprain, was a Scottish peer and politician of the Conservative Party.

Life and career

Balfour was born on 23 December 1925 as the son of Robert Balfour, 3rd Earl of Balfour and Jean Lily West Roundel Cooke - Yarborough. He attended Eton College.

As a member of the Merchant Marine, he participated in the Second World War. As a Master Mariner, he first served on HMS Conway. From 1960 to 1974 he was County Councillor for East Lothian, where he was also active in agriculture and was the family seat.

Balfour was president of the Cape Horners. In the late 1960s he was chairman ( Chairman ) of a Scottish mineral water company. In June 1969, he was Chairman of the steel wire manufacturer Bruntons, but came back after 8 months already.

He reported also letters to the editor in the Daily Telegraph to speak. In the 1970s, he criticized the housing policy of the government of Harold Wilson.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in November 1968, he inherited the title and the time associated seat in the House of Lords.

As Legasteniker he had to frequently consult a dictionary and found spelling errors in bills firmly. On one occasion he claimed that 53 objections, mainly because of typos and spelling errors. 50 of them were accepted and withdrew the draft.

He talked about the soil erosion in the Middle East and the government called on to take Israeli politicians to fight against it to complete.

During one of his last debate he said that it was not Angel Tight awareness of the Lords was to contradict the Scottish devolution, as it was voted for it. However, the bill would need improvements.

His seat he lost to the House of Lords Act 1999.

Family

Balfour was married on December 14, 1956 Natasha Georgina Anton († 1994), daughter of Captain George Anton. They had no children.
