Gerard Hoet

Gerard Hoet ( born August 22, 1648 Zaltbommel, † December 2, 1733 in The Hague) was a Dutch painter.

Life

He was the son of Moses Hoet (glass painter). At first he was a pupil of Warnard van Rysen (1625-1664), then of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. After the town of Zaltbommel was taken in 1672, he moved to The Hague, then to Amsterdam and Paris. Later he went to Utrecht, founded by M.van Zuylen, where he collaborated with Hendrick Schoock founded an art academy in 1697. From 1714 until his death he lived in The Hague.

Work

Hoet was one of the first Dutch painter who, Processed in his paintings of Italian landscapes, romantic ruins and fragments of antique statues he had seen in Italy. To Hoet lifetime were his pictures as modern and achieved high prices. He dealt primarily with religious, mythological or classical themes. Hoet also painted portraits and genre paintings and took over the design and illustrations for bibles.
