Arnold Houbraken

Arnold Houbraken ( born March 28, 1660 in Dordrecht, † October 14, 1719 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter and art writer

Life

Arnold Houbraken originally worked as an assistant in the merchant Johannes de Haan. This itself was also a painter and was a student of Nicolaes Maes ( 1634-1693 ). He had also paint the young Houbraken. From 1672 he was apprenticed to Willem van Drielenburch ( about 1625 - after 1677) and in 1673 at Jacobus Levecq ( 1634-1675 ). From 1674 to 1678 he worked under Samuel van Hoogstraten ( 1627-1678 ). 1678 Member of the St.Lukas Guild of Dordrecht was.

1709/1710 Arnold Houbraken settled on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam and went around the year 1713, nine months after England. He painted portraits and historical paintings, but despite his scholarly knowledge in history, architecture and perspective no outstanding artist.

A fruit of his research into the history of art is the work of De groote schouburgh the Nederlantsche konstschilders s signs eat ( 1718-19 ). His son Jacobus engraved portraits of this. Houbraken died 59 years old in Amsterdam.

Family

In 1685 he married Sara Sasbout Souburg ( 1662-1729 ), a daughter of the physician Jacob Sasbout Souburg ( December 26th 1694 ) and had her ten children, including:

  • Antonina ( baptized May 31, 1686 in Dordrecht; limited Amsterdam December 12, 1736 ) painter Jacobus X Stellingwerf ( 1667-1727 )
  • Christina ( Dordrecht Born Christened February 12, 1695, died after February 1760) painter, Antoni Elliger X ( 1701-1781 )
  • Jacobus Houbraken, ( Dordrecht Born Christened December 17, 1698; limited Amsterdam November 18, 1780 )

De groote schouburgh

Significantly Arnold Houbraken is less due to its images as a directory by Dutch painter and their biographies. His book De groote schouburgh the Nederlantsche konstschilders s signs eat (3 volumes, Amsterdam 1718-1719 ) is an important historical source. The second edition followed posthumously 1753., But he was not the first, already in 1604 had Karel van Mander ( 1548-1606 ) published the signage Boeck.

His first book was 1700 Tooneel van sinnebeelden ( description of symbols), where he was based on Iconologia of Cesare Ripa. In 1714 he created with Gezine Brit ( 1669? -1747 ) Stichtelyke Zinnebeelden (Divine symbols).
