Gerard Tichy

Gérard Tichy ( born March 11, 1920 in White Rock, † April 11, 1992 in Madrid; actually Gerhard Johannes Alexander Tichy Wondzinski ) was a German actor. He has participated in numerous Spanish and shot in Spain with movies, so among other things in El Cid (1961) and Doctor Zhivago (1965).

Life

Tichy was the son of a doctor. After a brief period as an artist he was first drafted into the Reich Labor Service, and then took part as an infantry soldier in the Polish and French campaigns. After serving on the eastern front, he saw the war as a lieutenant in Alsace.

From the POW camp in Bordeaux, where he spent one and a half years, he fled on Christmas Eve in 1946, but was soon arrested and spent it in another camp. A few hours later, he fled again and reached the southern French city of Dax, where he hid for a while in a movie theater until he finally got on the express train to the border town of Hendaye. Since the border was closed, he tried to wade through the Bidasoa to go to Spain. There he was immediately arrested by the Spanish police, after three months but found themselves resident in Spain German who vouched for him and caused his release. He first moved to San Sebastián, then to Madrid, where he worked as a waiter.

Through the mediation of the cameraman Hans Scheib ( * 1905) he came to the director César Fernández Ardavin who was searching for his film Neutralidad (1949 ) a performer for a German U- boat commanders. From then on, Tichy worked intensively on his film career and appeared the following year in five more films. Despite the lack of an acting training him were soon given some significant roles. He played both villains as well as positive figures and arrived since the 1960s, often in international films with Spanish locations used.
