Gerdes

Gerdes (also: Geerdes ) is a family name East Frisian origin.

Origin

Gerdes is a patronymic from " Gerd", a short form of " Gerhard", the " javelin thrower ". During the 18th century the population was denser in Ostfriesland, albeit later than in other German or European regions. In order to gain more clarity, especially in matters of inheritance, the people took no longer the name of their mother or their father, but led on the surname of the father. Although the policy ( Napoleon in 1811, and George IV of Hanover 1826 and 1857) repeatedly enacted laws to it, it lasted from the mid-18th century over a hundred years until the name change in Ostfriesland went out.

The name Gerdes probably originated in East Friesland. Since the name " Gerd" was rarely awarded and his patronymic therefore, he immerses himself until 1942 significantly only in the area around Witt mouth and rüstringer Ostfriesland south of the Jade Bay on, even though for many East Frisians (and many Gerdes ) to America, were in particular, emigrated to the area around the Great Lakes. An emigration or migration within Germany was but have been less attractive to the world wars, as in the USA, only then migrated the name Gerdes to Bremen, throughout North and soon also central and southern Germany.

Coat of arms

It exists because of the patronymic, so regional differences in naming no uniformly recognized family coat of arms Gerdes, but as for many other bourgeois families, there is also a modern entry in the directory of Arms bourgeois families. An illustration shows a white ( heraldic silver ) anchor on a blue background on the left ( heraldic right) and a blue vase with four acorns on a white background on the right. In another variant, this is a sign, not ennobled without a helmet because, under it, a nymph, with a palm tree; but there is in this form, no relation to the above meanings of the name, nor to its origin, and it is assumed that there are other coat of arms, which show more names reference. Others wear a two-piece coat of arms: The right side is decorated with a black eagle on a golden background, the left side of a blue rose on a silver background.

The above-mentioned mecklenburg - Pomeranian family Gerdes led in the 17th century between a lily flower branches in the coat of arms.
