Gerhard Hanappi

Gerhard Hanappi ( born February 16, 1929 in Vienna, † August 23, 1980 ) was an Austrian football player and an architect.

He was considered an all-rounder with a fine technique and the ability to record the game situation quickly, which - as Walter Nausch put it - " can play anywhere ." The former Austrian capped player was left-back of the key players in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, placed 3rd in Austria. He was called, among other things, 1953 in the World XI. After ending his football career " Gschropp " was, like Gerhard Hanappi was called due to its size ( it was relatively small 1.69 m), architect and built, among others, the West Stadium, which bears his name today.

Career

Star at Wacker and " the case Hanappi "

Gerhard Hanappi began his career as a footballer at small Viennese suburbs club Wacker. Even at age 17 he was playing regularly in the first team Meidlinger and could surprise party with them in 1947 his first championship title. In the same year, the Vienna Austria was defeated in the Cup 4-3. Gerhard Hanappi played in the finals still in the middle of Meidlinger, later, he was used mostly as a defender. Architects career

After ending his football career in 1965 Gerhard Hanappi began his architectural career. In the same year he was honored as the first football player with the Golden Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria.
