Gerhard vom Rath

Gerhard vom Rath ( born August 20, 1830 in Duisburg, † April 23, 1888 in Koblenz ) was a German mineralogist and geologist.

Gerhard vom Rath studied in Bonn, Geneva and Berlin, 1856 habilitated in Bonn, where he became in 1863 first extraordinary, in 1872 ordinary professor of mineralogy and geology. Until 1880, he served as director the mineralogical museum in Bonn.

His work has concerned various branches of crystallography and geology. He discovered the tridymite showed the square crystal system of Leucits and examined especially the various species of Feldspatfamilie and igneous rocks ( volcanic ). Vom Rath also showed several new types of rocks, such as the tonalite and the Augitsyenit. In addition, he delivered papers on the volcanic Rhineland, notably the Seven Mountains and the Laacher See, Switzerland, Tyrol, Italy, Norway, Elba, the Euganean Hills, Tuscany, Calabria, Sicily, Hungary, Transylvania. The material for these works he collected on repeated trips, and as more fruits of the latter he produced landscapes and social sketches.

1870 appointed him the Bavarian Academy of Sciences corresponding member.
