Gerhard Zimmer

Gerhard Zimmer (* May 23, 1949 in Dillingen an der Donau) is a German classical archaeologist.

Life

Gerhard Zimmer studied in Munich Classical Philology, German Philology and Classical Archaeology. He graduated with a teaching degree in Latin and Greek as well as the promotion of Paul Zanker from over Roman Occupation representations. 1978/79 he was touring the Mediterranean thanks to the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute. Between 1980 and 1985 he was involved in a project to explore the ancient bronze casting. In 1984 he became assistant at the Berlin Collection of Classical Antiquities, later curator and finally deputy director. Zimmer habilitation at the Free University Berlin in 1988 with a thesis on Greek Bronzegußwerkstätten. On the Collection of Classical Antiquities, he worked on several major exhibitions such as mirror images ( 1987), citizens Worlds ( 1993) and The Praying Boy. First room took a teaching position at the University of Berlin from 1997 at the Humboldt University in Berlin true. Since 31 July 1999 Gerhard Zimmer is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt.

Room is one of the most internationally recognized experts on ancient bronzes and their production. In addition, include the ancient terracottas in his areas of expertise. Following an interdisciplinary approach that engages room in his research whatsoever on the written ancient sources and the knowledge of ancient history to culture and art history.
