Low ( pronunciation: gɪərɪŋ ) is a city and the county seat of Scotts Bluff County in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

History

Due to a forecast of the Union Pacific Railroad was considered the site of today's low- suited to found a city. On April 27, 1887 Gering was founded. That same day, appeared the first issue of the newspaper Gering Courier. The town was first called " Vendome " but, in honor of their first banker Martin Gering, it was renamed. It took finally to 23 years after the foundation, to actually tracks south of the North Platte River were laid. The northerly Scottsbluff had in 1900 obtained by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad connection to the rail network. Gering yet evolved and became the county seat of the newly created 1888 Scotts Bluff County.

Geography

Gering is located on the North Platte River in western Nebraska to the Nebraska State Highways 71 and 92, the Wyoming border is about 30 km to the west. The Scotts Bluff National Monument is located immediately west of the city. Gering Scottsbluff, together with the so-called twin city complex, since both cities have grown together over the course of its history. Both, however, are independent and administratively linked.

Demography

According to United States Census 2000 Low has 7,751 inhabitants, of whom 3,627 men and 4,124 women.
