Germán Arciniegas

Germán Arciniegas ( born December 6, 1900 in Bogotá, † November 29, 1999 ) was a Colombian politician, writer and journalist.

Life

Arciniegas studied at the University in his hometown of law and economics.

In 1928 he founded together with former fellow students, the magazine Universidad. Politically interested and engaged, he went in 1930 as Vice Consul to London, where he worked in parallel as a correspondent for the newspaper El Tiempo. In the winter of 1933/34, he returned to Bogotá acted back from this period as the responsible editor of the newspaper El Tiempo. In 1934 he was elected to the Parliament komlumbianische.

1940 entrusted you Arciniegas with the management of the Embassy of Colombia in Buenos Aires ( Argentina). 1941/42 and 1945/46, he served his country as Minister of Education. Parallel to this, he served 1944-1948 as editor of the journal Revista de América.

Starting in the winter semester 1948/49, Arciniegas was entrusted successively with various teaching: at Columbia University (New York), Chicago State University (Chicago ) and others

Arciniegas died a week before his 99th birthday on 29 November 1999 in Bogotá and found his final resting place.

Reception

Arciniegas is considered one of the greatest essayists of Latin America. The thematic focus of his work includes the history, culture, history and sociology especially the countries bordering the Caribbean Sea, where Arciniegas always demands for social justice on the merits for the Indian population.
