German punk

German punk is a Subszene and an umbrella term for various styles within the German punk subculture.

Concept of the origin and use

The term " German Punks " first appeared in 1977 as the heading of a letter to the editor, the punk had sent tape times to the editor of music magazine Sounds to complain that German -language punk publications compared to English-speaking largely from the Press were ignored. Further dissemination as a generic term for a scene or a musical subgenre learned " German punk " but only in the early 1980s, in the context of the German- 82s punk movement. The term appears among others in reviews to "Underground Hits 1" (1982) and an EP group " wanker " ( also 1982) on. In the early 1980s, however, was a general differentiation of German punk and hardcore punk still largely uncommon.

Can be regarded as firmly established the notion since at least the late 1980s, including documented by the compilation series " German Punk fight songs ". Scene Intern liable to the Upper German punk label often a rather cliché -laden Image and especially the hardcore fanzine ZAP published in the 1980s mainly negative reports about the style and his followers. Newer Punkfanzines as the Taugenix interpret " German punk " but also much more generous and subsumed under him German punk / hardcore general to occupy as the term positive.

Style

While developed from the early German '77 punk rock mainly the German New Wave (among Nothing wrong colors, Neonbabies ) and, to a lesser extent, the subsequent fun- punk scene ( among others Mario network Normahl, street guys ), the later German punk scene did show through a tougher political punk style, partly under the influence of English street punk and the Polit- German rock of Sharam, to a lesser extent, already from early American hardcore punk. In the early 1990s therefrom developed a new variety, reunified German Punk Bands of the 80s as OHL, Slime or Toxoplasma had found a better produced and more metal -influenced style that inspired many younger groups to emulate them. Meanwhile differ for this reason, some labels and fanzines between " classic 80s German Punk" and " modern German punk " as it emerged in the early 90s and in which elements of Metal, Rock, Crossover or melodic hardcore now are an integral part.

Punk rock with German lyrics

Mid-90s appeared a new generation of bands that have played neither typical German punk in the style of the 90s yet the style of the 80s. Groups like ... But Alive, gray matter, Kafka, Lost Lyrics, Muff Potter, Psycho Gambola, Tim Curry, turbo State Does that distress, daydream or Scorched Earth were rather of the German punk to date more unusual models such as EA80, the Boxhamsters influenced Angeschissen, May 1 87 or Leatherface and reported melodic hardcore, post-hardcore and emo influences. They were dubbed by fanzines accordingly simply as " punk rock with German lyrics " or " German-language punk rock ". However, this was a temporary solution, which could not generally prevail. A real differentiation from German punk scene never succeeded completely.
