Gerontius, Metropolitan of Moscow

Gerontius (Russian Геронтий, † May 28, 1489 ) was Russian Orthodox Bishop of Kolomna and Metropolitan of Moscow.

Life

1447 Gerontius was archimandrite of the Simonov Monastery in Moscow and in 1453 he was consecrated bishop of Kolomna. After the death of Metropolitan Philip I. He was appointed on June 29, 1473 Metropolitan of Moscow and Russia. End of the 1470s he clashed with Ivan III. among other things because of different views on the ordination process of the new churches in conflict. During standing on the Ugra in 1480 he called for resistance to the end against the Golden Hordes. He had a moderate position in dealing with the heresy that spread in Moscow and Novgorod. 1482 ended Gerontius from his position as Metropolitan, put it later, but at the request of the Grand Duke continued.
