Géza Frid

Géza Frid [ ɡe ː zɒ frid ] ( born January 25, 1904 in Máramarossziget, Austria - Hungary, now Sighetu Marmaţiei, Romania, † September 13, 1989 in Beverwijk, The Netherlands ) was a Hungarian- Dutch composer, conductor and pianist.

Life and work

From his musical mother introduced early in music, he had his first public appearance with already 6 years. In 1912 he moved to Budapest to provide his education by studying at the Franz Liszt Academy on a solid foundation. He studied piano with Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. His exams he took at the Academy of Music in Budapest in 1924. In 1926 he undertook an extensive concert tour to Italy. His first string quartet in 1927 in Budapest and London was performed. In the following two years he had together with the violinist Zoltán Székely concert tours throughout Europe. In 1929 he settled in Amsterdam and took up residence there. His compositions have received international recognition (France, Switzerland, United States, Great Britain). During the occupation from 1940 to 1945 he protested, as other artists in the Netherlands also, by a concert strike. He escaped the detention and deportation of foreign Jews from the Netherlands.

In 1948, he received the Dutch nationality. 1948 and 1949 he undertook a concert tour through Indonesia, where he held 48 concert dates. This gave him the position of conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of Jakarta. As a result, he received numerous awards and prizes were given. In 1951, he launched a second concert tour through Indonesia and then by the Kingdom of Siam and Egypt. There were other tours throughout the UK, a third in Indonesia, Israel ( 1962) and the Soviet Union ( 1963) together with the singer Erna Spoorenberg. In subsequent years, additional tours were on the program (again, Israel, Turkey, Italy, South and North America in 1965, Suriname, Netherlands Antilles, Venezuela, United States and Canada).

In 1964 he was appointed professor of chamber music at the Conservatory of Utrecht.
