Géza Gárdonyi

Géza Gárdonyi [ ɡe ː ː zɒ ɡa rdoɲi ] ( born August 3, 1863 in Agárd, Hungary, as Géza Ziegler, † October 30, 1922 in Eger, Hungary) was a Hungarian writer.

Life

Gárdonyi was born on August 3, 1863 in Agárdpuszta, a small town on the coast of Lake Velencei. His father, Sándor Ziegler, was a mechanic, and his mother was Terézia Nagy. While Gárdonyi childhood the family lived in twelve different places, including in Sály where Gárdonyi his elementary school began ( 1870-1873 ). The last school year ended Gárdonyi in Hejőcsaba ( 1873-1874 ).

During the high schools years Gárdonyi learned in Sárospatak (1874-1876), or in Pest ( 1876-1878 ). From 1878, the writer teacher studied in Eger. After the studies he was teacher help in Karád (1881-1882), where he received his diploma. He taught thereafter in Devecser (1882-1883), Sarvar (1883-1884) and Dabrony ( 1884-85 ).

In 1885 he married Mária Molnár ( Csanyi ), but their marriage was unhappy. In 1892 they divorced.

In Győr Gárdonyi employees for the magazines Hazánk, Gyori Közlöny and Gyori Hírlap was. In 1886 he started his own newspaper entitled Tanítóbarát. Meanwhile, his short stories and poems have been published in various newspapers Pest.

Gárdonyi has received many awards. In his former home in Eger is now the Géza Gárdonyi Memorial Museum. Especially in Eger roads, schools and theater buildings were named after him, but also in other parts of the country. Plaques are located at houses and schools in which he worked. In Budapest is on the Bartok Bela utca, a monument of the writer.

Performance

Gárdonyi is primarily known as a storyteller, but also wrote poetry and plays. He first wrote crudely satirical chapbooks. His real literary career began with stories from the Hungarian village life, going back to memories of his youth, and idealizing, and naive describe the unspoiled world of the village. But his popularity is based primarily on his next historical novels, in which he describes topics of Hungarian history exciting and with patriotism. His major work, Star of Eger, is required reading in Hungarian schools.
