During the Soviet period, it was only as a granary, and then used as a garage. During the war over Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijani forces took advantage of the cathedral from 1989 as a warehouse for GRADE ammunition, and damaged it until May 1992, when Shushi was recovered by Armenian units. In the years after taking the church was repaired and renovated. Angel Statues - Replikien were handmade to replace the destroyed originals; a picture of a part of the coat of arms of Shusha. In 1998 she was re-consecrated, and now serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Artsakh, the Armenian Apostolic Church.
