Gianandrea Gavazzeni

Gianandrea Gavazzeni ( born July 25, 1909 in Bergamo, † February 5, 1996 ) was an Italian conductor, composer and musicologist.

Life

Gianandrea Gavazzeni was born in 1909 in Via Pignolo in Bergamo. He studied at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and from 1925 at the Conservatorio di Milano in Milan. There he attended the piano class of Renzo Lorenzoni and studied composition with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Mario Pilati. In Milan Gavazzeni also visited frequently the performances at the Teatro alla Scala under the baton of Arturo Toscanini.

From 1932 Gavazzeni concentrated on conducting, which he preferred above all the Italian opera of the 19th century, as well as the symphonies of the German Romantics, and a few works of the 20th century. In particular, he tried again forgotten works to bring to the stage.

Until 1968 he was artistic director at the Teatro alla Scala, the 1985 Medal of Merit Una vita per la musica him ( Eng.: A life in music ) lent.

Work

Gavazzeni is primarily known as a conductor of Italian opera. Great, who did much to the renaissance of the works of the native also from Bergamo Gaetano Donizetti. Particularly well known is his performance of Donizetti's Anna Bolena on April 14, 1957 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Maria Callas in the title role. The Opera Festival at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo in 2006 dedicated to the memory of his 10th death anniversary.

As a composer he has written several Koncerte and sonatas, including the Concerto bergamasco and the song The Song of St Alexander.
