Gila (Band)

Gila was a German progressive rock band from Stuttgart, which existed from 1969 to 1974.

Band History

Gila was founded in Stuttgart in 1969. For the original line-up included Wolf Conrad Veit, called " Connie " (vocals and guitar), Walter Wiederkehr (bass ), Fritz Scheyhing (organ and Mellotron ) and Daniel Alluno (drums). Become known through live performances, the band released two years later, their first, self-titled LP, which was in accordance with the time, influenced by the psychedelic sound. Producer of the album was Dieter Dirks. The album was released on a record label by BASF and is now considered rare collectors piece. Later, the album was reissued Fonoteam.

Shortly before their separation in 1972 played Gila live in the night music of the WDR. This appearance on 26 February 1972, at the only new pieces of music were played, was later released by Warner Bros. Records as a CD. The front cover was painted by Wolf Conrad Veit. After the dissolution Alluno played at Sameti and Wolf Conrad Veit joined Popol Vuh.

The group was re-founded in 1973. In addition to Conny Veit (vocals, guitar, flute, Moog ) Gila consisted of his then- girlfriend Sabine Merbach (vocals ) and Daniel Fichelscher (drums, percussion, bass) and Florian Fricke ( Mellotron, piano), both of Popol Vuh. The LP Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee is not musically similar to the first two albums. Here is firmly established, folky songs that are based on the book by Dee Brown, which deals with the oppression of the Indians in North America.

In the summer of 1974, the band disbanded Gila final. Veith was then active among others, Amon Düül II, Guru Guru and Coney Iceland.

Music style

Initially geared more to Pink Floyd, they changed the live album Night Works rather to an oriented at The Doors style. The new edition with a different line, however, is based more on the folk music of Indian character.
