Gilles Yapi Yapo ( born January 30, 1982 in Abidjan ) is an Ivorian football player who played from 2010 to 2013 at FC Basel.
Previous clubs
The attacking midfielder Gilles Yapi started his professional career in July 2000 when Ivorian football club ASEC Abidjan, whom he left in June 2001 to move to the Belgian ErstligistenKSK Beveren. For winter break, in early 2004, it was purchased by the French first division side FC Nantes where he received a contract until June 2007. In February 2006, he was loaned for three months at the Swiss first division club BSC Young Boys and there was his debut in the match against FC Thun. Although the Bernese were not initially willing to pay as required by the FC Nantes transfer fee, the definitive change came just before the transfer deadline on 31 August 2006 but concluded yet. In January 2007, Yapi extended his contract until 2010.
For the season 2010/11 he moved to FC Basel. His team debut was on July 20, 2010 in a 3-2 home win against FC Zurich and his first goal for Basel he scored in a 3-0 home win against FC St. Gallen on August 1, 2010. He was in his first season in Basel same Swiss champion.
He was injured in the second game of the 2011/12 season and made his comeback only in the away match against Young Boys on 16 February, 2012.
At the end of the 2012/13 season Yapi was with FC Basel for the third time Swiss champion and the team was in the Cup final, which they lost in a penalty shoot only. In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 he managed with FC Basel to the semi-finals where he performed against the reigning UEFA Champions League winners FC to Chelsea. However, they lost the Home and Away match and eliminated in the total score of 2-5 from. In a long season with a total of 76 games ( 36 in Super League, 6 in Cup, 20 in the Champions League and Europa League, including 14 test matches ), he had a total of 29 missions, 12 of them in the Super League, two in the cup and 4 inserts in the Champions and Europa League and 11 test matches. His contract was not renewed and he left the club.
