Gino Cervi

Gino Cervi ( May 3, 1901 as Luigi Cervi in Bologna, Italy, † January 3, 1974 in Punta Ala, Italy ) was an Italian film actor. In the German-speaking world, he became known mainly through the Don Camillo films in which he plays the communist mayor Peppone on the side of Fernandel.

Life

Gino Cervi was the son of theater critic Antonio Cervi. 1924, a year after the death of his father, he first appeared as a theater actor in appearance. He developed into one of Italy's most popular theater actor. In 1932 he had his first Azzurra screen appearance in the movie L' Armata. He became world famous after all three films of the Italian director Alessandro Blasetti: Aldebaran (1935 ), storms Morreale ( Ettore Fieramosca, 1938) and The Mysterious Avenger ( Un ' Avventura di Salvator Rosa, 1940).

After the Second World War, his popularity was told by the then-new medium of television a further boost. In his first television roles he played the Commissioner Jules Maigret by the detective novels of Georges Simenon.

Except in the Don Camillo films ( 1952-65 ) - four of the five completed films, he was dubbed for the German version of Werner Lieven - he also appeared in the Italian- French political satire The Man with the sash (1962 ) together with Fernandel on, in which he also a mayor, but this time played a fascist.

Shortly after Fernandel had died during the filming for the sixth Don Camillo film in 1971, this Cervi retired from the film business. In 1974, he died of a pulmonary infarction.

Cervi was married to Nini Gordini since 1928. He is the father of Tonino Cervi, a director, screenwriter and producer, and grandfather of actress Valentina Cervi and producer Antonio Levesi Cervi.
