Giorgos Kalafatis

Giorgos Kalafatis (Greek Γιώργος Καλαφάτης, * 1890 in Athens, † February 19, 1964 in Athens ) was a Greek athlete and football player.

Just a few hundred meters from the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, born in Exarchia Giorgos Kalafatis was the founder of the Greek sports club Panathinaikos Athens. He is considered one of the greatest Greek athletes of all time and asked a number of Greek records in jumping, throwing and sprint competitions on. Since his greatest passion, however, was the football, Kalafatis applied for his club Panellinios Athens the foundation of a football department. As the club's management a request did not comply decided to withdraw Kalafatis and independently to found a new club. In the autumn of 1908 was thus the Podosferikos Omilos Athinon (POA ) which showed that in the years to Panathinaikos Athens.

Kalafatis is now considered one of the founding fathers of the Greek football.
