Giovanna Melandri

Giovanna Melandri ( born January 28, 1962 in New York) is an Italian politician. In the second cabinet of Prime Minister Romano Prodi, she held the Department of Youth and Sports and was perceived in this capacity abroad, especially in connection with the scandals in Italian football.

Life

Melandri completed a business degree from the University La Sapienza. After that she was from 1983 to 1987 engaged in business. She then became involved in the environmental organization Legambiente.

In 1992, she participates in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, two years later she is elected to the Chamber of Deputies. Since 1998 she is a member of the Left Democrats, for they took over the Ministry of Culture this year, she led under the Prime Minister D'Alema and Amato to the change of government in 2001. From May 2006 to May 2008, she was Youth and Sports Minister.

It is also involved as president of an organization against the misuse of artificial fertilization methods. In October 2012, she became the President of the National Museum for the Arts of the 21st century, MAXXI, appointed.

Her sister Francesca Melandri is a screenwriter.
