Giovanni Antonini

Giovanni Antonini (born 1965 in Milan ) is an Italian flautist and conductor. He directs the Baroque Ensemble il Giardino Armonico.

Life and work

Antonini and studied music in the Civica Scuola di Musica his hometown, as well as at the Centre de Musique Ancienne in Geneva. With his ensemble Antonini could - especially with exemplary Vivaldi concertos - quickly establish itself as the exponent of historical performance practice, began with recordings and performances in the most important concert halls in Europe and the USA, as well as in Canada, South America, Australia, Japan and Malaysia.

Il Giardino Armonico

As a founding member passes Antonini since 1989, the baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, conducted it and plays solo on recorder and transverse flute. The ensemble was founded in 1985 by graduates of various European music academies in Milan - especially Luca Pianca and Antonini - founded and plays on period instruments. Giovanni Antonini is also in demand as a guest conductor renowned orchestras in Berlin, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Toulouse, Zurich, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. At the invitation of Sir Simon Rattle conducted Antonini 2004 and 2005, the Berlin Philharmonic and presented works of the 17th and 18th centuries. He is currently working with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, a recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies, the first six have already been published.

As an opera conductor

In the field of opera Giovanni Antonini led, inter alia, Monteverdi's L' Orfeo, Handel's Agrippina and Aci, Galatea e Polyphemus, Pergolesi's La serva Il matrimonio segreto padrona and Cimarosa. In the season 2008/ 09 he performed with Le nozze di Figaro and Alcina at La Scala.

Among the most recent recordings include Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op 6, Vivaldi's opera Ottone in villa and the albums Il Pianto of Mary - The Virgin 's Lament with Bernarda Fink and Sacrificium with Cecilia Bartoli.

2013 Giovanni Antonini will assume the artistic direction of the Festival Wratislavia Cantans in Poland.
