Giovanni Battista Casali

Giovanni Battista Casali (* around 1715 in Rome, † 1792 ) was an Italian composer.

Life

1740 Casali was admitted to the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna. Five years later ( 1745) he emerged as coadiutore by Girolamo Chiti on in Rome. On September 4, 1759, he appears finally as his successor, the Kapellmeister of St. John Lateran in Rome, which he held until his death. Besides his work as conductor of the Lateran basilica, he was a member of Congregation dei musici di San Cecilia in Rome. He was also from 1761 to 1773, in addition to its other Kapellmeister, also director of music at Santa Maria in Vallicella.

Casali enjoyed an excellent reputation as a teacher. His most famous student was André- Ernest- Modeste Grétry.

Creation

Casalis work was mainly limited to Rome. In his capacity as a conductor, he devoted himself mainly of church music. He wrote in part nor in the strict a cappella style of the Roman school. The occupations range from the four -part harmony to the eight - or nine -part double choir. In addition, however Casali also used the modern homophonic. In many of his works, these two compositional styles are facing. Overall there is an influence of the operas and interludes, which he wrote especially 1740-1752, to determine the liturgical music.

Grétry called him in his Mémoires " one of the most famous conductor in Rome ", while the catalog of San Giovanni in Laterano " one of the most eminent masters in church style " looks in it.

Among his numerous compositions became famous Missa in G major and numerous motets ( Confitebor tibi, Ave Maria, Exaltabo, Improperium ). This was published as an eBook in Stephan Lück collection excellent compositions 1859 in Trier.

The originals of most of his works have survived in the Santini collection, some in the collegiate church of Berchtesgaden.
