Giovanni Cornaro (Cardinal)

Giovanni Cornaro (* June 30, 1720 in Venice, † March 29, 1789 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

Cornaro was already working at the Curia, when he was appointed on April 12, 1742 as apostolic prothonotary. Since January 24, 1743 clerk of the Apostolic Signatura, he was from 1744 to 1747 Vizelegat in Bologna. Then relator of the Consulta, he was born on March 21, 1759 for the Republic of Venice Auditor of the Roman Rota.

Ordained on June 1, 1765 subdeacon, he was on 2 December 1775 to June 1, 1778 to the Governor of Rome and Vice - Camerlengo. Pope Pius VI. created him on 1 June 1778 as Cardinal and gave him on 20 July 1778 Cardinal Deacon the titular church of S. Cesareo in Palatio.

He is, though spacious, family Cornaro, from the Marco Cornaro (1500 ), Francesco Cornaro (1527 ), Andrea Cornaro ( 1544), Luigi Cornaro ( 1551 ), Federico Cornaro (1585 ), Federico Baldissera Bartolomeo Cornaro ( 1626 ) and Giorgio Cornaro (1697 ) were also cardinals.

The Cornaro belonged to the old families of Venice. They performed their lineage back to the ancient Romans. They were one of the richest families and had gained their wealth primarily through money lending.
