Giovanni Gallavotti

Giovanni Gallavotti ( born December 29, 1941 in Naples ) is an Italian mathematical physicist. He is a professor at the University La Sapienza in Rome.

Life and work

He studied at the universities of Rome ( Laurea 1963) and Florence ( diploma 1965), where he was then lecturer. 1966 to 1968 he was a research stay at the IHES and thereafter until 1970 at the Rockefeller University. He earned his doctorate in 1968 at the IHES ( Correlation function analyticity in the Ising model) with David Ruelle. From 1970 he was professore incaricato in the mathematical faculty of the University of Rome and in 1972 associate professor of theoretical physics in Naples. From 1975 he held a chair at the University of Rome (alternate for " rational mechanics", mathematical physics, hydrodynamics ). In 1982, he was Professor Lefschetz at Princeton University and in 1984/85 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Gallavotti deals with statistical mechanics (including the Ising model ), stochastic processes, dynamical systems (including billiard systems, KAM theory ), Navier -Stokes equations and the renormalization group.

In 1997 he received the Italian Premio Internazionale of the Accademia dei Lincei, the corresponding member he was from 1994. In 2007 he was awarded with Kurt Binder is the Boltzmann Medal for his fundamental contributions to an accurate understanding of statistical physics in equilibrium and non-equilibrium case, and in particular for the development of a constructive renormalization group for phase transitions, dynamical systems and quantum liquids., 1986 he was Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM ) in Berkeley ( Renormalization group theory and in mathematical physics ) and in Berlin in 1998 ( plenary lecture ). 1998 to 2004 he was scientific Leitungsrat of IHES, from 2000 in which the Erwin Schrödinger Institute in Vienna and from 2000 to 2005 the Institute of Henri Poincaré in Paris. In 2006 he was president of the International Association of Mathematical Physics ( IAMP ). He was co-founder in 1988 of the Journal of Nonlinear Science and was co-editor of the Communications in Mathematical Physics ( 1973-1976 ), the Journal of Statistical Physics ( 1976-1978 ) and the Journal of Mathematical Physics (2004 onwards ).
