Giovanni Malagodi

Giovanni Francesco Malagodi ( born October 12, 1904 in London, † April 17, 1991 in Rome ) was an Italian politician of the Liberal Partito Italiano (PLI ) and long-time president of the Liberal International.

Life

Member of Parliament and Secretary General and Chairman of the PLI

Malagodi studied post-school law and was after graduation ( Laurea ) as an active manager.

At the party congress of PLI in January 1953 economic program was adopted that had been largely worked out by Malagodi and proved to be contrary to the reformist approaches Nicolò Carandinis. Both stood as a candidate in Milan for the elections in June 1953, but during Carandini missed a mandate by only a few votes, Malagodi became a member of the Camera dei deputati ( Chamber of Deputies ) elected and represented in this until June 1979 the constituency Milan. In Parliament he dealt with economic issues and was between October 1953 and June 1958 Vice- Chairman of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the introduction of new taxes.

At the same time he was to succeed Bruno Villabruna 1954 Secretary General of the PLI and held this office for 18 years until 1972. Shortly thereafter, he was also active for the 1955, initiated by Jean Monnet Action Committee for a United States of Europe. In 1958 he became the successor of Roger Motz also president of the Liberal International and had that position until 1966. In May 1961 he was also Chairman of the Group of PLI in the Chamber of Deputies and remained in this position until January 1971.

He was elected Chairman of the PLI and thus the successor of Vittorio Badini Confalonieri 1972. The office of President of the PLI he held until 1980.

Minister and President of the Senate

Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti called him on June 26, 1972 Treasury Minister in the second cabinet, where he remained until July 7 1973.

After retiring from the House of Representatives, he was elected a member of the Senato della Repubblica (Senate ) on 20 June 1979, belonged to this until his death. He was there between June 1979 and June 1983 Vice Chairman and then to October 1983 Chairman of the Group Misto, which consisted of PLI, Radical, South Tyrolean People's Party ( SVP), Union Valdôtaine and independent senators.

Between 1982 and 1989 he was again President of the Liberal International. Malagodi was also in the Senate after the PLI been solved from October 1983 to October 1985 Leader of the PLI from the fraction Misto.

On April 22, 1987, he was the successor of amine gates Fanfani finally President of the Senate, this office but had only a few weeks held until 1 July 1987. With almost 83 years when he took office, he was so far the oldest President of the Senate of Italy.
