Giovanni Simeoni

Giovanni Simeoni ( born July 12, 1816 in Paliano in the Diocese of Palestrina, Italy, † January 14, 1892 in Rome) was cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Simeoni attended the seminary of Palestrina, the Collegio Romano in Rome and studied theology and canon law at the University La Sapienza in Rome. His studies funded by the noble Colonna family, who worked for his father.

In 1839 he was ordained priest. On March 5, 1875 appointed him Pope Pius IX. Titular Archbishop of Chalcedon and the apostolic nuncio in Spain. While the episcopal ordination took place only on 4 April, it was decided he was appointed Cardinal on March 15, but not yet officially announced. Thus he wore only the title of cardinal in pectore. Yet on 17 September of the same year Simeoni was officially elevated to the rank of cardinal. It was founded in 1876 as Cardinal with the priestly title Church Saint Peter in Chains. From 1876 to 1878 Simeoni held the office of Cardinal Secretary of State. From 1876 Simeoni has held various offices: he was prefect of the Apostolic Palace, Prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide.

On January 14, 1892 Giovanni Simeoni died in Rome.
