Girvan

Girvan is a Scottish harbor town in the unitary authority in South Ayrshire, about 33 km south of Ayr on the mouth of the Water of Girvan. In 2001 Girvan recorded 6992 inhabitants.

History

The city was founded in 1668. In the late 18th century and early 19th century many residents of fishing, shoemaking and weaving lived. The connection to the railway network in 1860 brought further economic stimulus. 1902 a golf course was set up. In 1963, opened a distillery for the production of grain whiskey with Girvan, 2007 came with Ailsa Bay distillery adds another for malt whiskey. Between 1966 and 1975, the distillery also Ladyburn was operated on the premises of the Girvan distillery.

The lawless Sawney Bean is supposed to have lived with his family in a cave south of Girvan.

Traffic

Girvan is situated on the A77 which connects Glasgow with Stranraer on a highway. About the local train station and the connection to the rail network is guaranteed.

Twinning

Torcy in the French region of Ile- de -France is twinned with Girvan.
