Terms such as " Kaiser- garden ", " imperial " and " Old Castle " in the area of St. John's Church and cemetery gave rise to the presumption that previously might have existed in Gittelde a castle. Test excavations in 1953 revealed that they discovered several dry stone walls of about 1 m width in the ground of the churchyard. They each passing below the tower or the foundation of the church choir. Since these walls are of older date than the house of God, they could come from a strong fortification. In addition, the St. John's Church is older than the Church of St. Maurice, which was only built after Gittelde 953 got to the Moritz monastery Magedeburg.
