Giulio Tonti

Cardinal Giulio Tonti ( born December 9, 1844 in Rome, Italy, † December 11, 1918 ) was a diplomat and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Giulio Tonti completed his theological studies in Rome starting with doctorates in philosophy, Catholic theology, canon law and civil law. He received on December 21, 1867 Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a professor of theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum " De Propaganda Fide ". From 1879 to 1882 he was in the service of the Apostolic Nunciature in France, from 1882 to 1892, he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal.

1892 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Titular Archbishop of Samos and appointed him as Apostolic Delegate for Santo Domingo, Haiti and Venezuela. The bishop ordained by Cardinal Giulio Tonti Vincenzo Vannutelli. 1893 made ​​him the Pope Apostolic Administrator of Port -au -Prince and Titular Archbishop of Sardes, 1894 Archbishop of Port-au -Prince. In 1902, he was Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil and Titular Archbishop of Ancyra, in 1906 he provided the same task in Portugal. In 1910 he had to flee because of the revolution unrest from Portugal.

1915 took him Pope Benedict XV. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti in the College of Cardinals. 1917 Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Religious and Tonti Member of the Council for the administration of the welfare of the Apostolic See.

He died on 11 December 1918 in Rome and was buried in the local cemetery Campo Verano.
