Giuseppe Demachi

Giuseppe Demachi ( born June 7, 1732 in Alessandria, † 1791 in London ) was an Italian violinist and composer of classical music.

Life

Giuseppe Demachi finds first mention in 1763 as the first violinist in the orchestra of his northern Italian hometown of Alessandria. 1765 twisted Demachi to Casale Monferrato, where he entered the service of Count Sannazzaro. There he worked with some interruptions, until 1776. Already in 1771 took Demachi a resident of Geneva, where he became concertmaster in 1774 probably the first " full-time " City Orchestra, the Concerto di Ginevra or Société de Musique de Genève. After 1777 Demachis different whereabouts are not considered secure. In the preface of his Symphony in "it" he is known as " maitre de Concert de la Princesse de Madame SAS Nassau -Weilburg ." Last safe whereabouts London, where he gave a series of concerts in 1791. It is assumed that Demachi died shortly after his stay in London.

Works

Based on the number and distribution of his publications was Demachi a prolific and beloved composer of instrumental music. His works follow the style galant of Luigi Boccherini and he used the drama of Tartini. A total of 17 Opus collections are known of him, although some works are numbered differently depending on the publisher. His oldest publication, op.1, is a series of six sonatas for violin and basso continuo, published in Paris in 1769. More prints are 4 Concert symphonies, 10 violin concertos, several Orchesterouverturen and six string quartets, which are also suitable as an orchestral quartets. On chamber music trio sonatas 56 and 18 duo sonatas, and several preserved in manuscript works were published. An impressive orchestral work is his programmatic symphony La campagne di Roma ( The Bells of Rome), which combines numerous sound colors.
