Giuseppe Fioroni

Giuseppe Fioroni ( born October 14, 1958 in Viterbo ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). From 17 May 2006 to 8 May 2008, he officiated in the second Prodi cabinet as Minister of Education.

Political career

Prof. Fioroni studied at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome medicine and surgery and worked as an internist and a university lecturer. In addition to his political office and his ongoing research activities at the Gemelli hospital he also has a seat on the governing boards of the Supreme Health Institute ( Istituto Superiore di Sanità ) and the Supreme Institute for Prevention and Safety at Work ( Istituto Superiore di Prevenzione e Sicurezza sul Lavoro ).

In his younger years, Fioroni engaged in Christian Democratic youth and scout organizations and was chairman of the Christian Democrats in his home town of Viterbo. According to his mandates on the City Council, then in the provincial council of Viterbo In 1989 he was elected mayor of the city and was at that time (until 1995 ) the youngest mayor in an Italian province capital.

In 1996 he was on the list of the center- left coalition The Olive in the Italian Chamber of Deputies and was health spokesman of the Partito Popolare Italiano, whose organization he headed from 1999. After his re-election in the 2001 parliamentary elections on the regional list Sardinia is Fioroni joined the Christian Democratic successor party Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita to where he was initially responsible for social policy, then for the community associations.

The elections in April 2006 confirmed his parliamentary seat, and Fioroni was appointed to the 15th electoral term as Education Minister ( Ministro della Public Education ) in the center-left government of Romano Prodi. On 23 May 2007, he was one of the signatories of the initiative for the establishment of the Coalition Party Partito Democratico.

He is married and has a son.
