Giuseppe Giovanni Antonio Meneghini

Giuseppe Meneghini ( born July 30, 1811 in Padua, † January 29, 1889 in Pisa ) was an Italian geologist, paleontologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist and author.

Life and work

Meneghini studied in his native city of Padua Medicine, where he was assistant at the city's Department of Botany, where he had already published several scientific papers on physiological and botanical themes. In 1839 he became professor of physics, chemistry and botany at Padua. In the course of the revolutionary intrigues in the Austrian Italy in 1848 he had to flee from Padua. He emigrated to the Tuscan Pisa, where he was the chair of mineralogy and geology of the fallen in the battles against Austria the previous chair holder Leopoldo Pilla (1805-1848) was transmitted. There, he gained a great reputation because of the paleontological collections that constitute a first important focus in Pisa. At the same time he was also director of the geological Cabinetts.

In Pisa he has published numerous papers on the geology of Tuscany. From 1853 to 1862, he reported to annual reports on the copper mines of the Apennines and on the Societas Mineralia Anglo- toscana. Works on the palaeontology of the island of Sardinia (1857-1860) and Lombardy (1867-1881) concluded from his scientific investigations. In recognition of his scientific achievements, he was inducted in 1888 in the Prussian Order pour le Merite for Arts and Science.
