Giuseppe Quaglio

Giuseppe Quaglio ( born December 2, 1747 in Laino; † January 23, 1828 in Munich) was an Italian painter, stage designer and theater architect of classicism.

Quaglio came from the painter and architect Quaglio family, which originally came from the northern Italian Laino near Como, later settled in Munich. His training as an artist, he received from his father Domenico Quaglio I (1723-1765) and Lorenzo Quaglio I ( 1730-1804 ).

Quaglio worked initially under the Elector Karl Theodor of Mannheim as a scene painter at the stages of Mannheim, Ludwigsburg, Speyer and Frankfurt am Main. As of 1778, he went as a scene painter in Munich, where he in 1801 as the successor of his brother Giulio III. Quaglio (1764-1801) was appointed as court architect.

He was the father of Simon (1795-1878) and Michael Angelo the Elder ( 1778-1815 ).

  • Fresco in the ball room of the Mannheim theater 1776.
  • Set design for the world premiere of Friedrich Schiller's Robbers. In 1782.
  • Stage set for Mozart's Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute in 1791 and 1793 in Munich.
