Givenchy-en-Gohelle

Givenchy -en- Gohelle is a commune in the arrondissement of Arras in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It has 2 041 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

History

The Romans settled here at least a "villa urbana " stand here in the municipality. The town's name is derived from " juveniacum ", owned by the Juvenius or Juventus. 1329 the place name is first mentioned in writing, at the time as Givenchy en le Gohelle.

During the First World War, Givenchy -en- Gohelle was completely destroyed. The village was rebuilt - the residents cleared the debris away rather than move.

Attractions

  • In the immediate vicinity of the village is in the municipality, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, a memorial to the more than 66,000 during the First World War, mainly in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917, fallen Canadian soldiers. It is the largest Canadian memorial in Europe and was built in 1921-1936. There 11,000 tons of concrete and 5,500 tons of Yugoslavia -related bricks were used.
  • Another monument is the Moroccan memorial, which commemorates fallen in the battles of 1915 Moroccan soldiers.
