Gleinalmtunnel

The Gleinalmtunnel is a motorway tunnel in Austria on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) with a length of 8,320 meters and connects the districts of Leoben and Graz-Umgebung in Styria. The tunnel saves the path through the Mur Graz via Bruck ad Mur Mur in the districts and Murau. It was opened on 11 August 1978. The route through the Gleinalmtunnel provides a time saving compared to the Mur about Leoben and Bruck / Mur of about 20 minutes.

Currently, the tunnel is performed only single tube and is operated in the oncoming traffic at a speed of 80 km / hr. With the full expansion was started in September 2013. The second tunnel is scheduled for completion by 2017.

The Gleinalmtunnel is operated as a special toll route, ie independent of the general Austrian motorway toll ( vignette ) is an additional usage fee in the amount of EUR 8, - will be charged.

The Gleinalmtunnel has as well as the Bosrucktunnel a video toll lane. After advance payment of the toll the indicator remains stored one year. In the video toll lane indicator is scanned and the passage allows automatically, without waiting.

On 6 August 2001, a car accident that caused a momentous fire and five people lost their lives occurred in Gleinalmtunnel.
