Glen Garioch Distillery

Glen Garioch is a whiskey distillery in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The distillery buildings are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

The distillery was founded in 1797. It has a long and varied history with many changes of ownership and closures. Since 1970 it is owned by Morrison Bowmore, but was completely taken over by the Japanese Suntory 1994. As one of the first distilleries in Scotland they turned to natural gas and the heat was conducted in greenhouses since 1976 to grow tomatoes. Glen Garioch has one of the few distilleries still have their own malting floors, but these are no longer in use. In 1995 the distillery was closed for some time and should be sold, but was then put back into operation in 1997. Although the distillery operates two wash stills, but only a spirit still, the second was not renewed. The whiskey

There are Glen Garioch in different variations on the standard range (10, 15, 21 years) but also some special bottlings ( Highland tradition, archives 46 years ). There is a slightly smoky, floral Highland whiskey.
