Glendalough

Glendalough ( [ ˌ ɡlɛndəlɒx ], Irish Gleann Dá Loch [ gl'ɑ ː ː N dɑ lox ], dt "Valley of the Two Lakes " ) is a valley located in the Wicklow Mountains, about 40 km south of Dublin. It is known for its monastic settlement - one of the most famous of the island of Ireland - the lower of the two lakes.

History

Plant

A squat chapel from the 11th century was called St. Kevin 's Kitchen because of reminiscent of a chimney tower.

A Celtic cross, St. Kevin 's Cross, can be visited. Although it is a typical high cross, it lacks the ornaments and the pictorial representation of Bible stories. It is believed that this high cross was painted, the painting but wegerodierte over time.

Near the shore of the second lake are a few other remains of buildings from the period of the monastery and the remains of a mine.

Tourism

The Glendalough Visitor Center offers visitors extensive information on the history of the monastery. In addition to the historic attractions, there are several well-marked hiking trails of varying difficulty.
