Glenys Thornton, Baroness Thornton
Dorothea Glenys Thornton, Baroness Thornton, of Manningham in the County of West Yorkshire ( born October 16, 1952) is a British politician of the Labour Party and the Co-operative Party and is a member of the House of Lords since 1998.
Life
Glenys Thornton graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science ( LSE) and in 1981 became political secretary of Konsumgenossenschaft Royal Arsenal Co - operative Society ( RACS ). The mid-1980s she became involved in increasingly beside the Labour Party and was, among other 1985-1991 Leader of the Labour Party in Greater London.
On July 23, 1998, she was raised as a Life Peeress with the title Baroness Thornton of Manningham in the County of West Yorkshire in the peerage and became a member as a member of the House of Lords.
During their membership in the House of Lords Baroness Thornton was, which is since 1999 member of the Board of Directors of LSE and 2005-2008 member of the Policy Forum of the Labour Party was, between 2008 and 2010 Whip the government and first in 2008 spokesperson for the Labour Group of Health, Labour and pensions as well as equality and then from 2009 to 2010 health policy spokesperson. In addition, it was between January 2008 and March 2010, Baroness in Waiting at the Royal Household (HM Household. Recently, she was in the government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown from March to May 2010 Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Ministry of Health.
Since the election defeat of the Labour Party at the general election on 6 May 2010, she has since 2010 spokesperson for the opposition Labour Group in the House of Lords for equality. In addition, it was 2010-2012 again health policy spokesperson and in 2010 briefly spokeswoman for Work and Pensions.
During the British Parliament of the donations scandal was initially accused her of having made false statements regarding an inhabited house by her mother. These allegations, however, were later refuted by the administration of Parliament, as it this house - for she had made cost claims - also inhabited and her sick mother maintains.
