GNU Mailman

GNU Mailman is free software for managing e- mail discussions and mailing lists.

Mailman supports the integration into websites, as well as the configuration has its own web interface. Used the software, for example on the open- source portal SourceForge, at Apple, Dell Computers, Heise Verlag, many educational institutions as well as on private servers.

Development

Mailman is part of the GNU project and is based almost exclusively on the Python programming language. Small parts of the code are written in C for safety reasons.

System Requirements

Mailman runs on most POSIX -based operating systems such as Unix, Mac OS X or Linux. Conditions are also a web server with CGI 1.1 API support (eg Apache), a mail server and an installed Python interpreter, version 2.1 (version 2.3 or later is recommended).

Alternatives

Significantly older the Majordomo mailing list system, which is still widely used and no installed Python provides. Majordomo is no longer being developed and is by modern standards a relatively complicated to use and configure.

Other alternatives are eg ezmlm, listserv or Sympa.
