Godescalc of Benevento

Godescalcus (also Godescalc, Gottschalk, † 742) was 739-742 Duke of Benevento.

Life

Godescalcus ' origin is unknown. He was married to a woman named Anna.

After the death of his predecessor Gregory in 739 Godescalcus was supported by a party hostile to the monarchy, without acknowledging the royal appointment right dux of Benevento. Godescalcus and Anna gave the monastery Volturno several estates.

King Liutprand was in alliance with Pope Gregory III. the rebellious dux Transamund II subject of Spoleto and banished to a monastery, so Godescalcus could expect support from any quarter. As Godescalcus 742 learned of the new Middle Liutprand, he prepared his escape to Byzantium. His wife Anna was already with all his valuables on board a ship when he was ambushed and killed by followers Gisulfs II from Benevento. His wife managed to escape.

Liutprand continued his nephew Gisulf II as a dux of Benevento.
