Gregory of Benevento

Gregorius († 739 ) was 732-739 Duke of Benevento.

Life

Gregory was a nephew of the Lombard King Liutprand. First, Gregory was probably dux of Clusium. To 732 Liutprand arranged the marriage between Gregory and Giselperga.

As dux Romuald II of Benevento 731 or 732 died, broke a succession dispute in which the usurper Audelahis first against Gisulf II, who was still a small child, prevailed. He reigned two years before he was overthrown by supporters Gisulfs. King Liutprand, who had intervened in the conflict, continued his own nephew Gregory as a dux and took Romuald minor son Gisulf II to Pavia, where he raised him like a son.

Gregorius seven year reign appears to have been in line with expectations king Liutprand, as nothing more is reported of disputes during this period. He seems to have been a capable ruler who succeeded in these troubled times, to remain calm and loyal to the king.

After Gregory 's death in 739 Godescalcus was recognized by a party hostile to the monarchy, without the royal appointment right dux of Benevento.
