Gökçedam

Gökçedam (formerly Hemite ) is a village in the central district of the Turkish province of Osmaniye. The town lies on the River Ceyhan on the northeast edge of the Çukurova plain, at the foot of the Dibek Dağları, about 20 km northwest of the provincial capital of Osmaniye. Gökçedam had a population of 757, an elementary school is available in the village in 2010.

Hemite is the birthplace of Turkish writer Yaşar Kemal.

The inhabitants live on agriculture. Previously, transhumance the predominant form of farming.

Attractions

In honor of Yaşar Kemal is situated on the promenade in the west of the town, a statue of Kemal's most famous fictional character İnce Memed. On a rock in the south-east of the village on the bank of Ceyhan is a Hittite relief. On the eastern edge of Gökçedam is on a rocky peak, the small Armenian city Amouda, now called Hemite Kalesi.
