Gold Coast legislative election, 1946

The elections to the Legislative Council of the Gold Coast were conducted in 1946 in the British colony of the Gold Coast. At the beginning of the same year had makeup accessories made ​​from the colony of the Gold Coast, the first colony in Africa, with a majority of African members of the 32 members of the commission were 21 blacks, including all 18 elected members. On 23 July 1946, the Legislative Council met for its first meeting.

Background

A new constitution for the colony had been proclaimed by order on March 29, 1946. The new Legislative Council should have 18 elected and 14 appointed members. Besides, it should first be responsible for overseeing the administration of the region of Ashanti, which was previously not part of the Crown Colony, ruled directly by the respective Governor of the Gold Coast. Four members should be selected in urban areas, the rest of provincial councils in the provinces.

The new constitution called for the holding of elections within three months after its promulgation and the first meeting of the newly elected Legislative Council within four months.
