The port city of Golfito (Spanish: little bay ) located in the province of Puntarenas on the southern Pacific coast of the Central American country of Costa Rica, near the border with Panama and around 370 km southeast of San Jose and has about 7000 inhabitants.

Geography

The city lies on a narrow strip of land between the eponymous bay and a hill in the Bay of Golfito and the larger Golfo Dulce. It is separated by the Osa Peninsula from the open Pacific.

The core city consists of two parts, the residential areas near the harbor and downtown, downtown. Farther north are the duty-free zone and an airfield. From the northern section, which used to be the headquarters of the United Fruit Company (now Chiquita Brands International ), was leading way up the hill to the Refugio Nacional de Fauna Silvestre Golfito - the wildlife sanctuary Golfito.

Most of the coastal lowlands are covered by evergreen rainforest. With 381-508 cm of rainfall is the area around Golfito one of the wettest areas in the world.

History

The city was founded in the 1920s. In the mid-twentieth century it was a stronghold of banana cultivation and therefore had one of the largest ports in southern Costa Rica. Labor unrest, declining foreign trade, rising export taxes and bad harvests led in 1985 to the closure of the United Fruit Company. Attempts instead to create African palm oil plantations were very successful.

During the 1980s, the growth of tourism began in Golfito. The city itself, the area around Playa Cacao were attractions for tourists. In the duty-free zone goods purchased can be picked up until the following day, so that the buyer is forced to spend a night in the city.

Economy and infrastructure

Ferries cross the Golfo Dulce from Golfito to Puerto Jimenez, the main starting point for trips to Osa and Corcovado National Park.

A major part of the tourist offer focuses on sport fishermen. Many hotels operate their own fleets with boats for sport fishing and experienced captains. Sailing, boating and water sports are also offered. The beaches south of Golfito - Zancudo, Pilon and Pavones are suitable for surfers.

In the south of the city of Chico Mendes, the film was shot.
