Gordale Scar
Gordale Scar is a limestone gorge near the British town Malham, North Yorkshire.
Special features of the canyon are the two waterfalls and overhanging limestone walls that reach a height of 100 meters. The cliffs used by climbers and directly to the falls leads past a difficult walk trail.
The gorge is a relic of the Ice Age and is traversed by the stream Gordale Beck, three kilometers downstream flows together with the Malham Beck to Aire. In the immediate vicinity of the village of Gordale the Janet's Foss, a small waterfall is with mythological significance.
Representation in art
The British poet William Wordsworth wrote a sonnet about the gorge and waterfall. The painter James Ward painted a picture that hangs in the Tate Gallery. This painting was important for the development of British landscape painting.
